In 1991-2, FDA scientists warned their superiors that GM foods could produce hard-to-detect allergens, toxins, new diseases, and nutritional problems. They uniformly recommended comprehensive, long-term safety studies. The FDA's political appointees in charge, however, completely ignored and even denied the concerns of their own scientists and allowed GM foods on the market without a single safety study, and no labeling.

Now the fears of the FDA scientists have been realized. Based on overwhelming evidence of harm, on May 19, 2009, the American Academy of Environmental Medicine called for the government to institute an immediate moratorium on GM foods, and in the meantime, for all doctors to prescribe non-GMO diets to everyone. They list reproductive, immune, gastrointestinal, and accelerated aging problems among the list of outcomes from animal feeding studies.
